Backup Equals “Whew!â€
Backing up your data is a lot like flossing. You know the benefits. It is relatively inexpensive. It doesn’t take too much time. And, it can prevent a lot of pain down the road.
The hard drive in my PowerBook (laptop) went far south the other night. Dead. No resurrection in sight.
Although, I did not have a complete back up—as in a nice Time Machine backup—I had recently copied all documents from it in anticipation of an upgrade to Leopard. I am now in the midst of reinstalling apps and documents and will soon have weathered this event unscathed except for a slightly lighter wallet.
In fact, as a result of this I am better off.
Pre-crash:
- 60GB of Storage
- 4200 RPM
- OS 10.4 Tiger
Post-crash:
- 160 GB of Storage
- 5400 RPM
- OS 10.5 Leopard (Time Machine will ensure better backups in the future)
Moral of the story: backup, backup, then backup!
Firefox 3!
I have been using Firefox 3 since an early beta, and was most impressed with the increased speed in OS X. The crucial extensions I need for everyday use have all been updated to work with version 3, so Firefox 2 may well be heading off into the sunset (except for testing of course).
One of those crucial extensions is Foxmarks, which keeps your bookmarks synchronized and available from anywhere on the Internet. After checking it out, I am now forced to come to terms with my being a digital pack-rat. I found that I have 1,129 bookmarks. And those are just the ones I was keeping in Firefox.
Free Photoshop Book (Limited Time—As In A Few Days Left)
Sitepoint.com is a great resource for all things Web-related. Tutorials. Community. And, books.
They have given out free chapters in order to promote their books in the past, but this time they are giving away the whole enchilada.
For the next four days you can get a complete copy of “The Photoshop Anthology: 101 Web Design Tips, Tricks & Techniques†in PDF form. This is no pamphlet. This eBook is just short of 300 pages. So for those who have some questions about Photoshop or are looking for some summer reading—get it here!
They have a countdown timer on their website so I assume their serious about the limited time part.
