Firefox 3!

Posted in Ramblings by Blake on the June 18th, 2008

I have been using Firefox 3 since an early beta, and was most impressed with the increased speed in OS X. The crucial extensions I need for everyday use have all been updated to work with version 3, so Firefox 2 may well be heading off into the sunset (except for testing of course).

One of those crucial extensions is Foxmarks,  which keeps your bookmarks synchronized and available from anywhere on the Internet. After checking it out, I am now forced to come to terms with my being a digital pack-rat. I found that I have 1,129 bookmarks. And those are just the ones I was keeping in Firefox.

I Love/Hate Safari

Posted in Ramblings by Blake on the June 7th, 2008

Safari is quick. Lightning quick when compared to Firefox 2, which is what I was using about 90% of the time—and yes, it is mainly because of the extensions.

When I upgraded to Leopard, Firefox took a back seat, unless I really needed the extensions like Firebug and the Web Developer Toolbar. Safari became my browser of choice.

Then I filled out survey. You know, the kind you ponder over and triple check all your answer. Well, I had about 15 minutes tied up in it and when I clicked on submit nothing happened—nada!

I don’t care if it passed the Acid 3 test first. At this point, I don’t care about its speed as no other browser would have just wasted 15 minutes of my time anyway.

By the way, I went to write this rant in WordPress, and guess what—Safari can’t handle the WYSIWYG interface, so I am now writing in Firefox 3, release candidate 2.

Of course, as soon I as post this I will be back in Safari.

Lights Out

Posted in Ramblings by Blake on the March 29th, 2008

If you have been to Google this evening, you could’t help but notice something was different. Their site was “lights out” for Earth Hour. The concept is to turn your lights out from 8:00 p.m. on March 29th, 2008 to raise energy use awareness.

Then there are some links to other sites, like Climate Savers, Smart Computing.

I would say I have strong environmental leanings, and I certainly agree that saving energy (money) is a good thing, but I am bothered by everything being attached to the concept of global warming. I’d rather not get into the whole “is it real” debate, but there is also evidence of warming on Mars (Martian SUVs?). Warming and cooling seem to be cyclical events, rather than man-made, and influence more by happenings with the sun, than leaving my computer on.

I wish environmentalism could be separated from politics, global treaties that weaken the sovereignty of our nation, and new age Mother Earth concepts. I would be much more eager to embrace it. After all, taking care of the earth was man’s first job given to him by God.
