Network Solutions Engages In Censorship

Posted in Ramblings by Blake on the March 23rd, 2008

Network Solutions has taken it upon itself to temporarily suspended access to a Dutch lawmaker’s site promoting a documentary exposing some negative things about the Koran. If you’re interested in the specifics Google it—far too off-topic to deal with in depth here.

What is interesting to take note of is that no one even knows yet what this documentary will say as the site only says it is coming soon, yet Network Solutions has already suspended it. Visitors to the site are instead greeted with:

This site has been suspended while Network Solutions is investigating whether the site’s content is in violation of the Network Solutions Acceptable Use Policy. Network Solutions has received a number of complaints regarding this site that are under investigation. For more information about Network Solutions Acceptable Use Policy visit the following URL: http://www.networksolutions.com/legal/aup.jsp

Network Solution’s policy states a prohibition against “objectionable material of any kind or nature.”

That is not a bad statement, except who gets to define what is objectionable? Network Solutions has no problem acting at the registrar for adult sites, and I am sure there has got to be some anti-Christian sites with them as well. Since I find those objectionable, maybe I could have them shut those down as well. That could be a positive outcome from this. I won’t hold my breath.

I would strongly recommend moving any business that you have with Network Solutions from them for two reasons. First, as a protest against their role as thought police. Second, and perhaps more importantly, to make sure you don’t get censored. You see the message of the cross of Christ, is quite objectionable to many people. The timeless truths of the Bible are not always popular, and who’s to say people won’t complain about your “narrow-minded” site that says there is only one way to God, and that is through Jesus Christ. (Your site does say that somewhere, right?)

End of rant.
